Off-Season Training Update

I will be competing in Body Building again on 8/2 at the Knox Classic in Knoxville, TN and again on 8/9 in Nashville at the TN State Championship.

Off-season training has gone very well for the most part.  I have increased my off-season weight by roughly eight pounds which is a few pounds less than where I wanted to be going in.  My bodyweight seemed to plateau around 192-193 and it became difficult to continue eating as much.  I expect to be 175 lbs @ 4% BF at the next show which is 10 lbs heavier than my lean weight last year.  My thighs have grown over 1/2" year over year (comparing off-season measurements).  In the long term, I still want to add another inch to my thighs and another 1/2" to my calves.

My bench press max has increased 35 lbs to 315.  My squat max has increased 40 lbs to 385.  My deadlift max has increased 30 lbs to 435.  The only lift I tried to increase was my squat, and my legs definitely responded in a positive way.

The toughest challenge this year will be no longer competing in the Junior division and jumping up into the Open division.  This division is full of athletes who have been competing and training for much longer than myself.  Since my opponents will be tougher than before, I am not raising the bar on my goals.  My goal for this year will be the same as last year - to place in each division I enter.  Some may ask, why set the bar low?  Well, I have only been training for this since Jan 2012 and I think I need more time to develop before my goal becomes to win my weight class or win the overall.

Knox Classic Bodybuilding Show

The show was huge with over 200 competitors!  I finished 2nd place in the Junior Lightweight division and 4th place in the Knox Lightweight division.  The competition in the Knox was very difficult and I was very surprised and happy to have placed.  The guy who won in my JR division was the same guy who placed ahead of me from Oak Ridge who also dropped his weight to compete in this lightweight division. J

I was also lucky enough to be approached about a sponsorship from Complete Nutrition after the show.  I haven’t accepted yet, but will look into the details.  This is very exciting for me!

I weighed 164.4 lbs on Friday and gained 24 lbs after the show – some of you asked how such a crazy thing is possible, so I am including what I ate after the show on my blog (see Aug 4 - Sunday Diet).  I actually ate quite a bit less after this show than I did after Oak Ridge… only consuming about 12,000 calories on Sunday (compared to my average of 2300 per day during training).

Thanks to everyone who has supported me, especially those who came to the show and cheered me on and those who helped with my training, posing, and music routines.  For those who attended, I know it was a very long show to sit through to see me at the start and at the end, but I very much appreciate your support and definitely owe you guys a round of beers! ;)

Here I am on our local WBIR:

What's Next?

I will be taking some time off to enjoy with my family.  I plan to compete again next year after I can grow my legs some more.  Several of my new friends who compete in physique are trying to get me to compete with them and I am considering it as long as it does not detract from my body building ambitions.  I'll be posting updates on here sporadically from time to time, but since this competition is over, I will no longer be posting my daily routines or diet.  Thanks for checking it out and if you have any questions, just drop me a line!

About an hour before the weigh in at 164.4 lbs... severly dehydrated.

The top 5 finishers in the Knox division (I am second from the left).

During intermission, my friend Jody who competes in physique, IFBB Pro Hidetada Yamagishi, and me.
